Spring In Your Step

It’s still festival season in the Mideast what with the advent of seasonal change, and these days it’s Tunisia’s turn with Al-Mawred Al-Thaqafy’s (Cultural Resource) biennial and month-long Spring Festival. In a serendipitous turn, on the program today is one of our favourite projects Mina WorldMusic fronted by Palestinian chanteuse Terez Sliman with some extremely adept musicians from Portugal. If you’re there, well worth checking it out.

For once the capriciousness of the weather common at this time of year did not rear it’s ugly head at the Mada Market event last weekend, which benefitted from a fine day and featured music supplied by Dandin. Personal highlight for us was running into the very talented artist Ali Abdel Mohsen, who is also the man behind this fantastic video for the Abyusif song ‘Shit!…Msh La2y Wla Tishirt!’

The after effects of the Oshtoora Festival showed little sign of abating either with a further night of performances at Zig Zag in Cairo featuring Missy Ness and Hello Psychaleppo who finally managed to perform in Egypt not once, but twice. Needless to say, this Oshtoora afterparty did what it said on the tin and continued till the odd hours of the morning. The day before, Jordanian rock behemoths Autostrad played a free gig for their Egyptian fans at Cairo Festival City.
